11 Best Website Builders for Small Businesses in 2026

Illustration of a website being assembled on a laptop with a construction crane

The best website builder depends on what your business needs to do after launch. Wix is a practical starting point for a general business site, Shopify deserves a place on a retail shortlist, and WordPress suits businesses that want control over their content and hosting. AI tools add more options, but a convincing first draft is only part of a working website.

For a Canadian business, the decision also involves currency, renewal costs, payment support and who will maintain the site. A CAD$20 subscription, a US$20 subscription and an AI plan with usage charges are different budgets.

The recommendations below are based on current published capabilities and pricing checked on September 12, 2026. They are choices for specific needs, not a claim that every platform has been tested in an identical build.

Start with the type of website you need

If you are still deciding who the website should serve, use our guide to website niche ideas to define the audience, offer, and action the site needs to support.

  • A business website you will manage yourself: shortlist Wix or Squarespace.
  • A low-cost hosted site: compare Hostinger’s upfront term and renewal price.
  • An online store: start with Shopify, or WordPress with WooCommerce for more customisation.
  • A growing content and service website: consider WordPress or Webflow.
  • A design-led marketing site: consider Framer or Webflow.
  • A simple one-page presence: Carrd may be enough.
  • An AI-assisted WordPress build: consider 10Web.
  • A custom calculator, portal or web app: evaluate Lovable or Bolt, with technical review before launch.

Start with 2 candidates. Test the same real content and customer action in both before buying an annual plan.

Website builders and AI tools are not all alike

A hosted builder combines editing and hosting. Wix, Squarespace and Shopify also offer AI features within an established system for managing pages or products.

WordPress is an open-source content management system. Its block editor, optional visual builders and plugins provide the editing experience. AI can assist within that setup, but WordPress itself is not one bundled subscription.

Tools such as Lovable and Bolt can generate an application with custom logic. That is useful when visitors need to calculate, submit, retrieve or manage information. It also creates responsibilities around data, permissions and ongoing software changes.

Choose the kind of output first. “Built with AI” does not tell you whether you are getting an editable business website, a WordPress installation or a custom application.

If you need a page for a specific campaign rather than an entire website, compare landing page builders and AI tools by their form delivery, testing features, and campaign costs.

1. Wix: a versatile business website builder

Wix logo

Best fit: owners who want pages, forms and business tools in a managed platform.

Wix combines visual editing, hosting and AI creation tools. It is worth considering for a service business that wants to manage routine changes without organising separate hosting. Confirm that your required booking, payment or marketing features are included in the plan you choose.

Price: the official Wix plans page shows USD reference rates of US$17/month for Light and US$29/month for Core on annual subscriptions paid upfront. Core adds payment acceptance. Local pricing and taxes vary; these are not Canadian-dollar quotes.

Main trade-off: your website runs within Wix’s platform. Check your options for moving content and rebuilding elsewhere before committing to an elaborate setup.

If your shortlist is already down to these 2 platforms, our WordPress vs Wix comparison covers editing, maintenance and migration in more detail.

2. Squarespace: portfolios and service brands

Squarespace logo

Best fit: creative professionals and businesses whose work benefits from strong photography and consistent layouts.

Squarespace is a useful candidate for presenting projects, services and a relatively straightforward store. Its templates and built-in AI tools provide a starting structure, while your photography, examples and service descriptions give the site substance.

Price: the Canadian view of Squarespace’s pricing page displayed Basic at CAD$21/month and Core at CAD$32/month with annual billing, before applying a promotional code. Basic lists a 2% online-store transaction fee; Core lists 0%. Payment processing remains separate, and digital content has its own fee structure.

Main trade-off: check the cost of the complete setup, including any scheduling or email-marketing subscription. A site that looks right still needs to support the way customers book and pay.

3. Shopify: a store-first business

Shopify logo

Best fit: retailers that need products, checkout, inventory and sales channels in one commerce platform.

Shopify is a strong starting point when selling is the website’s main purpose. Its AI tools can assist with store creation and ongoing tasks, but product information, shipping rules and payment configuration still need attention.

Price: Shopify Basic in Canada is listed at CAD$37/month when paid yearly, or CAD$49/month when paid monthly. This excludes introductory offers. Apps, premium themes and payment fees can increase the total; third-party transaction fees may apply depending on the payment setup.

Main trade-off: custom retail workflows can require paid apps or development. Test product variations, shipping, refunds and the integrations you actually need.

If WooCommerce is also on your shortlist, compare Shopify vs WooCommerce for Canadian businesses before choosing your store platform.

For a professionally scoped store, Maple’s ecommerce website design services start at CAD$3,300 for a Starter store. The build fee is separate from operating costs.

4. Hostinger: a lower entry-cost hosted option

Best fit: a simple business site where budget matters and the available editor covers the requirements.

Hostinger combines hosted website editing with AI tools. Compare the specific builder and included features at checkout: buying hosting for WordPress is a different setup from using Hostinger’s own website builder.

Price: the Canadian builder page lists Premium at CAD$4.19/month for a 48-month purchase, paid as CAD$201.12 upfront, renewing at CAD$15.39/month. The Unlimited offer is CAD$5.59/month for 48 months, CAD$268.32 upfront, renewing at CAD$23.69/month. Check applicable taxes and current offer terms.

Main trade-off: the low advertised monthly equivalent requires a long commitment. Confirm ecommerce eligibility, AI allowances and the cost of email and domain renewal after included periods end.

5. WordPress: control over a growing website

Best fit: businesses that need flexible service pages, publishing workflows, integrations or a choice of hosting provider.

Self-hosted WordPress.org lets you choose how the site is built and maintained. The block editor supports everyday content changes; additional functionality comes through plugins or development. WooCommerce can add an online store.

Price: the software is free. Hosting, a domain, optional licences and maintenance are separate. As a planning example, Maple’s typical small-site hosting, domain and plugin costs total approximately CAD$275–$525/year before maintenance, email, taxes and the initial build. This is not a fixed WordPress subscription.

Main trade-off: someone must own updates, backups and compatibility checks. Use our WordPress hosting guide to compare the infrastructure separately.

WordPress.com is a hosted service with different plans. Do not use its subscription prices as the cost of a self-hosted WordPress build.

6. Webflow: structured content and design control

Webflow logo

Best fit: a marketing team or designer who needs control over layouts and repeatable content templates.

Webflow is worth shortlisting when the website needs a defined design system and CMS collections, such as case studies or resources. Its AI tools can assist with creation, but someone still needs to understand the site’s structure and editing workflow.

Price: Webflow’s current Site plans list Basic at US$15/month billed yearly and Premium, which includes its CMS, from US$25/month billed yearly. Basic is for sites without a CMS. Workspace requirements and add-ons, including localisation, can affect the total.

Main trade-off: design freedom brings a learning curve. Ask the intended editor to add a new service or case study before choosing it. Also check what functionality would need replacing if you later exported or moved the site.

7. Framer: visual marketing websites

Best fit: portfolios, product marketing pages and businesses that value a visual design workflow.

Framer combines visual editing, publishing and AI assistance. It suits a project where the main challenge is presenting a clear offer with well-designed pages. Evaluate its CMS against the amount and variety of content you plan to publish.

Price: Framer’s annual-billing prices start at US$10/month for Basic and US$30/month for Pro. The pricing page lists site redirects and staging under Pro. Additional editors, localisation and usage-related additions can increase costs.

Main trade-off: the cheapest plan may not contain the publishing or migration features you need. For a store or customer portal, check the required integrations rather than assuming an attractive frontend includes the entire system.

8. Carrd: a focused one-page website

Carrd logo

Best fit: a personal profile, temporary presence or a small offer that genuinely fits on one page.

Carrd is an economical choice when a visitor needs a short explanation and one clear next step. A free version can help you try the editor.

Price: Carrd Pro Standard is US$19/year and includes custom-domain support and forms. Domain registration is separate. Pro Lite costs less but does not include the same capabilities, so compare features before choosing by price.

Main trade-off: a one-page structure is a poor fit for a business that needs substantial, distinct service pages and a growing article library. Keep the scope small instead of forcing a full website into one long page.

9. 10Web: AI creation with WordPress underneath

Best fit: someone who wants AI-assisted creation alongside a WordPress CMS and managed hosting.

10Web occupies a useful middle ground between a hosted builder and an independently assembled WordPress site. Its platform includes AI website creation and WordPress management features.

Price: the 10Web AI Starter offer displays US$10/month with a 12-month purchase of US$120, against a displayed regular total of US$240. It includes 1 website and a monthly AI-credit allowance. Confirm renewal terms and current resource limits before purchase.

Main trade-off: establish which editing tools and features depend on the subscription. Ask what remains functional if you move hosting, and whether the included resources suit the intended site. AI generation does not remove WordPress maintenance requirements.

10. Lovable: custom interactive experiences

Best fit: a prototype or custom web application, such as a calculator, customer portal or internal tool.

Lovable lets you describe an application and develop it through conversation. It can also create marketing pages, but its value is clearer when the project needs behaviour beyond displaying content.

Price: Lovable Pro starts at US$25/month on monthly billing with 100 monthly credits. A free plan is available. Check building, hosting and in-app AI usage together; the subscription is not a promise of unlimited operation.

Main trade-off: generated software needs review. A form must submit and store data correctly, permissions must protect private records, and someone needs to handle future changes. Code access is useful, but moving an app also involves its data and connected services.

11. Bolt: AI building with usage-based limits

Best fit: interactive websites and applications where a developer or technically confident owner can review the output.

Bolt generates websites and apps from prompts and provides hosting options. It belongs on an app-building shortlist alongside Lovable, especially when you want to develop and refine custom behaviour.

Price: Bolt Pro starts at US$25/month billed monthly, with the entry allowance starting at 10 million tokens/month. Its free plan includes limits and Bolt branding. Review hosting allowances and any external services separately.

Main trade-off: tokens measure AI usage, not completed pages or guaranteed results. Complex changes can take several iterations. Check how you will edit ordinary content and recover a working version after an unsuccessful change.

When does a free website builder make sense?

A free plan is useful for learning an editor, checking layouts or preparing a draft. For a public business site, check custom-domain support, platform branding, form limits and whether the free allowance supports the intended use.

Free is not the same as a free trial. A trial ends; a free tier normally continues with restrictions. A free AI allowance may also run out while you are still revising the first version.

Spend on the features that make the site usable for customers before paying for animations or extra AI credits. Our website cost guide for Canada separates platform expenses from the cost of planning and building the complete website.

What AI can help with, and what still needs work

Illustration of a developer beside a web page layout with code and JavaScript symbols

AI can propose layouts, draft copy, generate code and speed up revisions. The result still needs your actual services, prices, work examples and customer knowledge.

A contractor’s website, for example, needs accurate service coverage, evidence of completed work and a working quote request. Invented testimonials and generic city descriptions make the draft less trustworthy, however polished it looks.

Give the builder a precise brief: business type, customer, primary action, required pages, approved facts and integrations. Explicitly tell it not to invent reviews, qualifications, guarantees or results.

Then check a complete journey: someone arrives on a service page, understands the offer, submits an enquiry and receives confirmation. Our contact page examples can help you assess that final step.

Chat-based coding assistants can help produce a website too. Ask who will provide hosting, content editing and ongoing maintenance before treating generated code as a complete replacement for a managed builder.

How to choose a builder that supports SEO

Look for editable titles and descriptions, useful URLs, internal links, indexable content and redirects when pages move. For a content-heavy site, also check how easily you can create and maintain consistent templates.

For a local service business, the structure must support distinct services and genuinely useful area information. Our local SEO guide for service businesses explains the wider requirements. Choosing a builder is only one part of that work.

Google’s guidance on generative AI content emphasises accuracy, quality and relevance, and warns against scaled content that adds no value. An “AI SEO” feature does not guarantee rankings.

Before launch, test the actual pages on mobile, including forms and menus. Use website speed testing tools to investigate performance instead of relying on a builder’s demo score.

Check the full cost before committing

  • Upfront payment: multiply the monthly equivalent by the required term.
  • Renewal: record what changes after the offer, domain voucher or email trial ends.
  • Features: include apps, bookings, localisation, extra editors and payment fees.
  • AI usage: separate creation allowances from the cost of running the published app.
  • Maintenance: name the person responsible for updates, backups and broken functionality.
  • Leaving: establish what content, code and data you can move, and what needs rebuilding.

For WordPress sites, Maple’s website care plans are CAD$95/month for business sites and CAD$165/month for WooCommerce stores. Include support in the comparison if you do not want to manage maintenance yourself.

Once your website is ready, compare live chat and AI assistants for websites to help visitors take the next step.

Choose for the next stage of your business

A DIY builder can be the right choice when the requirements are straightforward and you have time to manage the content. A custom build becomes worth considering when the website needs more planning, integrations or ongoing development than you can comfortably handle.

Maple builds custom WordPress websites, with Starter sites from CAD$1,300 and Business sites from CAD$2,300. Our web design services in Vancouver explain the scope and process.

If you already have a working website, identify a specific limitation before changing platforms. Maple’s full website redesign starts at CAD$2,900; migration requirements affect the final scope. A faster way to generate a new homepage is not, by itself, a reason to discard useful content and existing search visibility.
