Why Vancouver Businesses Stall on Page Two

Most of the sites we audit are not broken. They rank between position 15 and 40 for terms their customers actually search, which means Google understands the business but does not trust it enough to show it. That gap is usually caused by three things at once: a site structure where several pages compete for the same search, a Google Business Profile that has been left alone for a year, and no local links pointing at the site.

None of those are fixed by writing more blog posts. They are fixed by cleaning up what already exists, then building on top of it. That is where every campaign we run starts.

Map Pack or Organic Results, Which One Wins

SEO in Vancouver

For most service businesses in Vancouver, the map pack is worth more. It sits above the organic results, it shows your phone number and reviews before anyone reaches a website, and the searches that trigger it carry the highest buying intent. If you are a clinic, a contractor, a repair shop, or a professional service, map pack visibility should be the first goal.

Organic results matter more when your customer researches before they call, when you sell online, or when your service area is wider than one city. E-commerce, B2B, and specialised services fall here. Most businesses need both eventually, but the order matters, and we will tell you which one to fund first instead of selling you everything at once.

Our dedicated local SEO service covers the map pack side in depth.

What We Fix in the First 90 Days

SEO gets sold as an open ended monthly fee with vague deliverables. Here is what the first three months actually look like with us.

rank in google search

Month 1, find and stop the damage

Full technical crawl, indexing review in Google Search Console, keyword and competitor analysis, and a fix list ranked by impact.

Most sites have at least one issue quietly blocking pages from ranking. We find it before we write a word of content.

google algorithm

Month 2, fix the foundation

Technical fixes go live. Duplicate and competing pages get consolidated. Title tags, headings, and internal links get rebuilt around real search demand.

Your Google Business Profile gets fully optimised, and citation cleanup starts so your name, address, and phone match everywhere.

keyword search

Month 3, start building

New service and location pages go live where the research shows demand. Review generation starts.

Local link outreach begins. From here the work compounds, and you get a one page report every month showing what was done and where rankings moved.

Technical Problems That Quietly Cap Rankings

These are the issues we find most often on Vancouver small business sites, and they are all invisible from the front end.

  • Canonical tags pointing at a staging domain. Common after a host migration. It tells Google the real version of your page lives somewhere else, so your page never earns full credit.
  • Several pages targeting one search. If you have four pages about your main service, Google splits the signal between them and ranks none of them well. Consolidation alone often moves a page ten to thirty positions.
  • Pages indexed that should never be. Tag archives, attachment pages, and old drafts eat crawl budget that should go to your service pages.
  • Review markup with no real reviews behind it. Google has ignored self serving review snippets since 2019, and in worse cases it triggers a manual action.
  • A slow theme carrying twenty plugins. Speed is overrated as a ranking factor and underrated as a conversion factor. If your site takes four seconds on mobile, you are losing leads you already paid to attract.

Technical SEO

Local Ranking Outside Downtown Vancouver

Google weighs physical proximity heavily in local results. A business in Port Coquitlam will struggle to rank in a downtown Vancouver map search no matter how good its SEO is, and a downtown agency will tell you otherwise because it sells better.

What actually works for businesses outside the core is building visibility across the municipalities you genuinely serve. Coquitlam, Port Moody, New Westminster, Burnaby, Surrey, and the Tri-Cities each have their own search behaviour and their own competitors, and most of them are far less contested than Vancouver proper.

A real location page for each area you serve, backed by local citations and a properly set service area on your Google Business Profile, usually produces leads faster than fighting for a downtown term you were never going to win.

We are based in Port Coquitlam, so this is the market we know best.

Off-Page Optimization

Ranking in a City That Searches in Four Languages

Metro Vancouver has one of the highest immigrant populations of any Canadian city, and a large share of local searches happen in Chinese, Punjabi, Korean, Farsi, and Tagalog. Almost no agency here builds for it, which leaves an unusually open field.

If your customers come from a specific community, there are search terms with real volume and almost no competition, and a Google Business Profile written for that audience can put you in the map pack for searches your competitors do not even track.

If your business serves one of these communities, tell us when we talk. It often turns into the cheapest wins in the whole campaign.

On-Page Optimization

When Your Web Designer and SEO Are One Team

Most SEO agencies do not touch your website. They send a list of changes to your developer, your developer gets to it in a few weeks, and half the changes are implemented wrong. Every month of that costs you ranking time.

We build WordPress sites, so when the audit finds a technical problem we fix it ourselves the same week. If your current site is too slow or too badly structured to rank, we will say so and quote a redesign instead of charging you a retainer to optimise something that cannot be optimised. See our WordPress web design and Vancouver web design services.

What SEO Costs in Vancouver in 2026

Across the Vancouver market, monthly SEO retainers run from around $500 for basic local work up to $8,000 or more for competitive campaigns. Most small and mid sized businesses in Metro Vancouver land between $1,500 and $3,500. Below $500 a month, no agency is building meaningful links or producing real content, whatever the proposal says.

Our pricing is published because you should be able to compare before you book a call.

Not ready for a retainer

We also run a one time technical and local SEO audit for $1,200. You get the full findings, the priority order, and the keyword research, and you are free to implement it yourself or take it to another agency. Most audits at this depth are quoted between $2,500 and $15,000 in Canada. If you go on to a retainer with us within 60 days, the audit fee comes off your first month.

Contract terms

Three months minimum, because nothing meaningful happens faster and we would rather be honest about that than take your money. After three months it is month to month, and thirty days notice ends it. No lock in, no auto renewing annual contract, no exit fee. Prices are in Canadian dollars.

Common Questions About Working With Us

We are based in Port Coquitlam and most of our clients are in Metro Vancouver, which is where local knowledge matters most. We do take clients elsewhere in Canada when the project is a good fit.

No. We work on your existing site and hosting. If the site itself is holding you back we will tell you what needs to change, and you can decide whether we do it or your current developer does.

That is a common starting point. Usually the previous campaign was either too small to move anything or spent on content nobody was searching for. The first thing we do is look at what was already paid for, because some of it can often be salvaged.

Yes, and it is more common than most owners expect. Here is our guide on what to do when your profile is suspended.

There is no fixed number. What matters is having more recent reviews than the businesses currently ranking above you in your area. We show you exactly where you stand against them and set a monthly target. Our guide on getting more Google reviews covers the process.
