The best SEO tools help you answer a business question: why a useful page is not being found, which topic deserves attention next, or whether search visitors become customers. A larger software bill does not necessarily give you better answers.
For most small businesses, start with Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4, Bing Webmaster Tools, and PageSpeed Insights. Add a crawler for technical investigations and one paid research platform when you have regular work for it. Use AI visibility tracking when you need to measure specific customer questions across AI search engines.
This guide compares 12 tools by the decisions they support, their current pricing, and their limits. Selections are based on current public documentation, pricing, and fit for typical business workflows.
Best SEO tools at a glance: what to use and what to pay
Pricing checked September 15, 2026. Paid software prices below are in US dollars unless marked GBP. Annual commitments are labelled; taxes, exchange rates, extra users, and usage add-ons can change your total. Canadian businesses should compare the final checkout amount before subscribing.
| SEO tool | Best use | Entry price or practical starting plan | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Google visibility and indexing | Free | Reports on your verified properties, not competitors |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Bing diagnostics and first-party AI citation reporting | Free | AI reporting covers supported Microsoft and partner experiences |
| Google Analytics 4 | Search traffic, leads, and sales | Free standard version | Useful outcomes require correct measurement setup |
| PageSpeed Insights | Loading, responsiveness, and layout stability | Free | A lab score does not describe every visitor’s experience |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Technical crawling and URL checks | Free up to 500 URLs; paid GBP £199/user/year | Advanced investigations need technical judgement |
| Ahrefs | Competitor, keyword, and backlink research | Starter $29/month; Lite $129/month | Research capacity and history vary by plan |
| Semrush | Coordinating SEO research, audits, and tracking | SEO $139/month; SEO + AI Search Starter $199/month | Compare package and add-on costs carefully |
| SE Ranking | Daily keyword and AI prompt tracking | Core $129/month | Seats, projects, and tracking allowances still matter |
| BrightLocal | Local rankings, listings, and profile audits | Track: $41/month for one location | Price and coverage depend on locations and plan |
| Surfer | Content planning and optimisation | Standard $99/month, billed yearly | Content recommendations need editorial review |
| Yoast SEO | WordPress on-page and technical settings | Free version; Premium $118.80/year | Plugin feedback is not a ranking guarantee |
| OtterlyAI | Monitoring mentions and citations in AI answers | Lite $29/month | Selected prompts represent a sample of AI visibility |
The prices and plan boundaries are explained in the individual sections below, with links to the providers. These tools serve different jobs; the table is a shortlist, not a recommendation to buy all 12.
Free SEO tools that establish your website’s baseline
1. Google Search Console: best for understanding Google visibility
Google Search Console shows how your site performs in Google Search through clicks, impressions, click-through rate, and position data. Combine performance reports with URL Inspection and indexing reports to investigate important pages.
Use it for: finding service pages with relevant impressions but weak traffic, checking which page appears for a query, and investigating why a page is excluded from indexing.
For a Canadian business, filter by Canada and examine mobile and desktop separately before changing content. A global average can hide performance in the market you actually serve. Also separate branded searches from searches by people who have not heard of your company.
Price: free. Limit: Search Console does not show competitors’ private data, and its query reporting is not an exhaustive record of every search.
2. Bing Webmaster Tools: best for Bing and first-party AI citation insights
Bing Webmaster Tools adds another search engine’s view of your website. Its AI Performance reporting also shows citation activity across Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI experiences, and selected partners.
Microsoft expanded the preview in June 2026 with Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and date comparisons. These help explain where your content is being referenced and how citation patterns change. See Microsoft’s AI Performance update.
Use it for: checking whether useful pages are cited for topics related to your business, alongside Bing indexing diagnostics.
Price: free. Limit: this is not a complete report of every AI platform. Citation Share is an observational measure, not traffic share or a quality score, and it does not reveal competing domains.
3. Google Analytics 4: best for connecting SEO to leads and revenue
Google Analytics 4 helps you understand what happens after someone reaches your website. It complements Search Console by connecting acquisition and landing-page activity with actions such as completed enquiries or purchases.
Use it for: distinguishing a high-traffic article from a page that brings qualified business. Configure meaningful key events and, for an online store, validate ecommerce measurement before relying on revenue reports.
A visitor clicking your phone number is a useful signal, but it is not proof of a completed, qualified call. Keep those outcomes separate in your reporting.
Price: the standard version is free. Limit: missing tags, consent choices, blockers, and incorrect events can affect what you see. Traffic totals alone do not measure SEO’s business value.
4. PageSpeed Insights: best for finding page-experience problems
PageSpeed Insights combines lab diagnostics with real user performance data when enough data is available. It helps investigate loading speed, responsiveness, and visual stability.
Use it for: testing representative templates: your main service page, a product page, a category page, and a long article. Fixing a shared template can improve many URLs at once.
Check whether the real-user report describes the specific URL or the wider origin. A strong desktop test does not clear a slow mobile experience. Our website speed testing guide explains the broader diagnostic workflow.
Price: free. Limit: the performance score is a lab summary, not your Google ranking. Prioritise meaningful visitor problems over chasing a perfect number.
Paid SEO tools for technical work, research, and tracking
5. Screaming Frog SEO Spider: best for technical website audits
Screaming Frog crawls URLs to find broken links, redirects, duplicate titles, indexing directives, and other technical patterns. It is especially useful before and after a redesign or content consolidation.
Use it for: answering a specific question, such as “Which internal links still point to redirected articles?” Export the affected pages, fix the links, and crawl again to verify the change.
Price: the free edition crawls up to 500 URLs. A paid licence is GBP £199 per user per year for one to four licences. Paid features include JavaScript rendering and integrations; compare the free and paid feature list.
Limit: a crawl flags conditions, not business priorities. Duplicate titles may deserve attention; intentionally excluded cart or account pages may be working correctly.
Use our technical SEO audit checklist to decide which crawl findings need attention and how to verify each fix.
6. Ahrefs: best for competitor and backlink research
Ahrefs combines keyword, backlink, competitor, and site-audit tools. It is a strong option when your main question is which relevant topics and referring websites competitors have that you do not.
Use it for: examining the pages earning a competitor visibility, then deciding whether your existing pages can satisfy that intent. A keyword gap does not automatically justify another article.
Before turning a keyword gap into another article, use our keyword research and page mapping guide to check the intent and choose the right destination.
Price: Ahrefs Starter is $29/month and Lite is $129/month. Starter is a limited entry plan. Ahrefs also offers free access for verified websites; broader AI research through Brand Radar has separate pricing.
Limit: competitor traffic is estimated, and backlink metrics are proprietary. Check research allowances and historical data before committing.
7. Semrush: best for managing SEO and AI search in one platform
Semrush suits teams that want keyword research, competitor analysis, site audits, and position tracking in a shared workflow. Its current packages distinguish SEO from combined SEO and AI Search plans.
Use it for: connecting an opportunity to an existing page, assigning an improvement, and tracking the relevant search terms afterwards.
Price: SEO costs $139/month; SEO + AI Search Starter costs $199/month on monthly billing. Starter includes 500 tracked keywords and 50 prompts tracked daily. Annual billing reduces the monthly equivalent.
Limit: extra users and reporting add-ons can increase the bill. Choose the package that covers your actual work; a larger dashboard does not remove the need to implement changes.
8. SE Ranking: best for teams needing substantial daily tracking
SE Ranking brings keyword research, audits, competitor analysis, and traditional and AI search tracking together. Its Core plan is worth comparing when you need more tracking capacity than a small starter allowance.
Use it for: following a defined set of service, product, or location searches while monitoring related AI prompts.
Price: Core costs $129/month, or $103.20/month with annual billing. The listed allowance includes 10 projects, one manager seat, 2,000 keywords, and 100 prompts tracked daily.
Limit: headline keyword counts do not settle the comparison. Check the search engines, locations, languages, seats, and reporting access your workflow requires.
9. BrightLocal: best for location-based SEO monitoring
BrightLocal focuses on local rankings, business listings, Google Business Profile audits, and review workflows. Geo-grid reporting is useful because visibility can differ across neighbourhoods.
Use it for: checking whether your business is visible where customers actually live or work. A favourable result near your address does not describe an entire service area. Turn findings into work with our local SEO audit checklist.
Price: BrightLocal’s published plan table lists one-location Track at $41/month, Manage at $54, and Grow at $65. Annual and multi-location prices differ. The detailed table is more specific than the older “from $39” introduction on the same page.
Limit: tracking identifies gaps; it does not fix listings, improve reviews, or expand your real service coverage by itself. Businesses needing implementation can explore our local SEO services.
SEO tools for content, WordPress, and AI answer monitoring
10. Surfer: best for structured content optimisation
Surfer helps teams plan and improve content, with recommendations informed by search results and content analysis. Its current plans also include AI visibility capabilities, with different tracking allowances.
Use it for: checking a brief for unanswered questions and missing explanations. For a service page, that might mean explaining scope, suitability, or the next step more clearly.
Price: Standard is $99/month billed yearly, an annual commitment of $1,188. The separate AI Search Analytics offering is $82/month billed yearly; it is not the same content plan.
Limit: a content score is not evidence that a claim is accurate or that your page deserves to rank. Reject suggestions that add repetition, irrelevant topics, or unsupported promises.
Use our on-page SEO checklist to turn those suggestions into practical improvements to your content, headings, links, and page experience.
11. Yoast SEO: best for managing SEO inside WordPress
Yoast helps WordPress users manage search titles, descriptions, sitemap output, and other page-level SEO settings. Premium adds features such as redirect management, internal-link suggestions, and AI-assisted metadata workflows.
Use it for: publishing a page with the right title, indexing settings, and social preview, then checking how that page connects to the rest of your site.
Price: a free version is available. Yoast SEO Premium is $118.80/year excluding VAT in the US-dollar view.
Limit: a green light measures the plugin’s checks, not Google’s assessment. You still need a useful page and sensible site structure. If you are choosing between WordPress plugins, use our dedicated WordPress SEO plugin comparison.
12. OtterlyAI: best for starting a focused AI visibility tracking project
OtterlyAI monitors selected prompts to help you see brand mentions and source citations in AI generated answers. It is useful when a team wants a focused tracking tool alongside its existing SEO software.
Use it for: tracking a small set of genuine customer questions, then examining which pages are cited and whether your business is represented accurately.
Price: Lite costs $29/month for 15 prompts, checked daily across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Mode are paid add-ons.
Limit: 15 prompts are a pilot, not a complete picture of a market. Expand coverage only when the findings lead to useful work.
Which SEO tool combination makes sense for your business?
Start with a free foundation: Search Console, GA4, Bing Webmaster Tools, and PageSpeed Insights. Then choose the smallest addition that resolves a recurring problem.
| Your situation | Useful addition to the free foundation | Why it earns its place |
|---|---|---|
| A local service business with one location | BrightLocal Track; one WordPress SEO plugin if applicable | Connect local visibility gaps with your actual service area |
| A business publishing competitive educational content | One of Ahrefs, Semrush, or SE Ranking | Research demand and competing pages before commissioning more content |
| An ecommerce site with many URLs | Screaming Frog plus one research suite | Investigate product, category, filter, and redirect patterns |
| A team struggling with inconsistent content briefs | Surfer, if existing tools do not cover the need | Make editorial review more systematic |
| A business investigating AI recommendations | Existing suite’s AI tracking, or OtterlyAI for a small pilot | Monitor relevant questions without immediately buying another large suite |
For example, BrightLocal Track plus the free foundation costs $41/month before tax for one location. Adding another $129 research subscription only makes sense if someone will regularly use it to decide and complete work.
Before paying, test five searches that matter to your business. Does the tool cover your Canadian market? Can you identify the intended ranking page? Can you export the information you need? Are the limits workable? A trial should answer those questions.
How to turn SEO tool reports into useful website improvements
Consider a service page that receives relevant impressions but few enquiries. Buying another tool is not the first decision. Work through the evidence in order:
- Confirm the page’s purpose. Decide which service and audience it should serve. A buying page and an educational guide can cover related topics while answering different questions.
- Check Google visibility. In Search Console, filter the relevant query or query group and examine the Pages tab. Multiple URLs appearing is a reason to investigate intent, not automatic proof of cannibalisation.
- Inspect technical barriers. Use URL Inspection and a crawl to investigate indexing directives, canonical choices, redirects, and internal links.
- Review the actual search results. Check whether Google is showing service pages, guides, directories, or products. A tool’s keyword label cannot replace that inspection.
- Improve the page that should satisfy the search. Clarify the offer, add useful evidence, answer missing customer questions, and link from relevant supporting articles.
- Validate the outcome. Recheck the technical change and follow the relevant enquiries or sales. Note the change date so later comparisons have context.
If two pages serve the same purpose, compare their useful content, links, and performance before combining them. If they serve different purposes, make that distinction clearer. Do not delete a useful page simply because two URLs share a keyword.
To keep those improvements moving, compare project management tools for SEO and use a task workflow that records the page, owner, deadline, and verification criteria.
What SEO tools can and cannot tell you about AI search visibility
AI features inside SEO software do different jobs. A writing assistant generates or edits text. A research integration brings data into a conversation. An AI visibility tracker observes selected answers. These capabilities are not interchangeable.
When evaluating AI visibility, keep four measures separate:
- Brand mention: an answer names your business.
- Page citation: an answer references a specific URL as a source.
- Referral visit: someone follows a measurable link to your site.
- Business outcome: the visit contributes to a qualified enquiry, purchase, or another meaningful action.
None guarantees the next. Compare like-for-like prompts, markets, languages, and engines over time. A prompt written to include your brand name is useful for checking accuracy, but it does not show whether a new customer would discover you.
For a Vancouver service business, a useful unbranded question might be “What should a small business compare when choosing an SEO agency in Vancouver?” Track the answer and its cited sources, then assess whether your own pages explain those buying criteria honestly.
Google’s guidance for generative AI search emphasises useful, original content and sound technical foundations. It does not require special AI text files, artificial content chunking, or a separate writing style.
Make important information easy to find, support factual claims, connect related pages, and give readers something specific they can use: a worked example, a transparent comparison, or a clear decision rule. Buying an AI tracker cannot secure a citation or recommendation.
When professional SEO support is more useful than another subscription
A tool can show that your site has competing pages, weak internal links, or technical problems. Someone still has to decide what to change, make the changes correctly, and connect the result to business goals.
If reports are accumulating while the same problems remain, implementation is the next investment. Maple Web Design’s SEO services combine technical work, content improvements, and measurement. Published packages start at CA$750/month; compare the scope and current terms on our SEO pricing page.
Choose software when it helps your team complete the work. Choose support when you need the work planned and delivered.
Frequently asked questions about SEO tools
Start with Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, GA4, and PageSpeed Insights. Add Screaming Frog’s free edition for crawls within its 500 URL limit. Together, they cover visibility, indexing checks, visitor actions, and common technical investigations.
Usually, start with one. Their research and auditing functions overlap. A second subscription is easier to justify when you can name a recurring task the first platform cannot handle within your plan, rather than simply wanting another set of estimates.
An assistant can help organise a supplied export, draft a brief, or explain an issue. It does not automatically have your private analytics, a complete backlink index, or reliable live rankings. Use connected or supplied evidence and verify recommendations before applying them.
None. Tools can improve research, diagnosis, and measurement, but they do not control search results. Google’s AI feature documentation also makes clear that meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or appearance.
No. A health score summarises a vendor’s checks. It can help organise an investigation, but it cannot establish whether your website attracts the right customers or meets their needs. Judge progress through relevant visibility, working pages, and meaningful outcomes together.
